- Educate people about long term impacts of ignoring the present day environmental situations.
- Build a strong, positive attitude towards the need to be 'concerned individuals' and to contribute in every way one can, not only towards nature but towards livelihood.
Background
We live in a beautiful country and Thimphu in particular is a beautiful city. We love Thimphu for what it is; the capital and heart of our nation and now our home. But take a stroll down the street and look closely. You will come across dismaying sights of littered sidewalks, unkempt surroundings, filthy drains, dirty walls, etc. These shouldn't at all make our capital city!
Therefore, bothered by seeing those unhealthy sights, a group of friends in Thimphu who work for different government and corporate offices, formed a group called Nopkin Volunters for Social Services.
Primarily, we aim to reach to the mass through various forms of awareness campaigns regarding the importance and the need to maintain cleanliness. We also intend to convey the message directly to the public by rendering voluntary cleaning services in some distraught locations which are in dire need of some clean sweep. We also aspire to educate the public even if we have to go from door to door. We also can act as ambassadors of the NGOs and the Municipality, all of which are directly concerned in health and sanitation issues or are for bigger responsibilities and commitments on preservation and sustenance of the environment, by helping drive their messages to the people.
Following the inception of NVSS, the members have concentrated their interest in the suburbs of Thimphu . Being a small voluntary group, with no means of funding, our first aspiration is to bring positive changes in the locality where the members reside, i.e. in Thimphu . However, NVSS's purpose shall neither be restricted to doing only cleaning campaigns nor will it restrict itself to Thimphu only. We aspire to spread our helping hands into more areas.
Nopkin.com
A website called Nopkin.com (www.nopkin.com) is an official website for NVSS. The website will serve as a platform for organizing the activities of NVSS. We encourage any registered member to float an idea for NVSS to come forward. If you spot any unclean area that direly needs a cleaning hand, throw the idea to Nopkin.com. Everything starts with just an idea!
Message
Throughout our endeavors, we have tried to educate people on the importance of cleanliness, which is one of our foremost objectives. However, it takes a lot to educate the people. But we never give up! We are now more than encouraged to strive forward with renewed zeal and enthusiasm because after carrying out various cleaning and social works, we have educated ourselves. For one, education starts from oneself!
So the message is, come join us and make a difference. The difference might not be tangible at once, but it surely comes to oneself. We educate each other, that is. After the cleaning work with us, we assure you that you will go a wise man because you learn that it takes so little to dirty but so much to clean. And you will despise those who throw wastes around in gay abandon. That is definitely education!
